Buddy the Elf

One of my favorite Christmas movies of all-time is Will Ferrell's Elf.  It has a bit of everything: humor, music, and smiling.

I just like smiling.  Smiling is my favorite.

So when I walked into my son's orthodontist's office this afternoon, I nearly peed myself.  Thank God for those Poise pads.

Just check out the Christmas spirit I found there:

SANTA'S COMING!  I KNOW HIM!!

It is really hard to have a bad day when a 6' tall elf is telling your kid his braces are coming off in February.

I'm embracing Christmas again, which has not always been the case in our PC-world of "holiday" spirit.  Read about my crazy rant by clicking HERE for today's Chicago Parent.

HINT: Definitely NOT a "Festive Tree."

  1. Fercryingoutloud! Our orthodontist is round and jolly, but the only thing in their office is an antique cabinet we aren't allowed to touch. Train around tree=festive, btw!

  2. I have to say that I have an aversion to Will Ferrell, but Phil loves this movie. He'll watch it every single time it plays on TV during the Christmas season. I've never been so happy to not have satellite right now! :)

Loved your article. Amen Sister, and Merry Christmas!!

    1. I'm not a huge Will Ferrell fan either, but for some reason this one just cracks me up! And thank you, Andi!

  3. Too cute with the orthodonist! I bet it must be a fun office to work in! Glad to hear son's braces will be off in February! That is a great Christmas present I do believe.

I too agree with your sentiments about saying Merry Christmas. I did notice one of my supervisors at work when I was talking with her about something the other day was politically correct to wish me Happy Holidays when we both knew we were both going to be celebrating Christmas a week later. But I'm sure it was stressed from the higher ups to be politically correct. (don't you just hate that term?)

    Merry Christmas!

    1. I think there is a bit of a revolt against walking the tightrope of political correctness At some point, things went from honorable intentions to just ridiculous. I'm sticking with Christmas no matter who tells me otherwise! I'm ordering a shirt: "You're not the boss of me!"

    2. As you know, Marianne, I substitute teach in middle school and high school and have the delight of interacting with the students when I rap for them.

Upon the authority of one of those students, "There is no such thing as political correctness." I am tending to agree with that student and with you.

Great column, by the way. Also, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  4. Could not agree more! Religious freedom doesn't mean everyone pretends their nothing; it means we tolerate and our respectful of others' beliefs. I love learning about different cultures and customs. I abhor this homogenized PC holiday BS. I would be delighted if someone wished me a Happy Hanukkah at a store because I would realize they were sharing the spirit of their season with me. Why would that offend me? This PC offensive nonsense is a slippery slope to intolerance (could not agree with you more about this). What a boring world where everything was the same and no one was allowed to be different. What horrible lessons to teach the children. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, etc... Jeanine

  6. I have to tell you, I just saw ELF for the FIRST time this week. I think it's 10 years old, and I never saw it. It is very sweet, but it doesn't beat The Grinch. Cindy-Lou Who, and that poor dog with the tree branches on his head....I well up every time.

  7. I've said "Happy Holidays" for years, because to me it encompasses both Christmas and New Years. No PC involved-just a shortcut for me.
