For anyone who grew up in the 70s and 80s in Chicago, there was a certain horror show host to whom all local kids paid weekly homage. The program Son of Svengoolie showcased an oddly made-up guy sporting a black top hat and speaking in a kitsch Transylvania accent. CLICK HERE for video.
One of the recurring jokes in the program was to make fun of the suburb of Berwyn. Why he selected Berwyn is a mystery. Yet 30 years later, I cannot hear the name "Berwyn" without thinking of Svengoolie and his rubber chickens (an ongoing gag on the show).
When Meijer sent me a promotional package to announce their latest store-opening in Berwyn, guess where my mind drifted? That's right. Directly to Svengoolie and those damn rubber chickens.
Anyway, as thanks to Meijer for jogging hilarious memories about the odd programming decisions of the 70s and 80s, I'd like to let everyone know that Berwyn will be welcoming a Meijer store on August 14th at 7111 Cermak Road. My mom loves Meijer, and if that's not the highest praise possible, I don't know what is.
